Valentines Day ~ A Critical Analysis

Premarital relationships are haraam

I am a typical teenager and believed in everything my friends did. I grew up reading magical fairy tales that always had a handsome prince falling in love with a beautiful princess and carrying her off into the sunset to live happily ever after. I watched “Snow White”“Cinderella” and “Sleeping beauty”that all focused on “falling in love” and “having a good life”.

And I too grew up believing this is what life is all about. This is why we are here – to find the perfect soul mate and live happily ever after. I was not addicted to reading novels but I was in love with those stories that told me an exciting, romantic life was the essence of our existence, which spoke of gorgeous women, enticing dashing men before they zoomed away in their private yacht to an exotic island. Christmas in Islam and Christianity in the Light of the Sacred Scriptures

         Mohammad Omar Faruq (Milky)

What is Christmas?

Christmas is the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is considered the Son of God, and the saviour of all people. With the birth of Christ, Christianity essentially begins; thus, Christmas also celebrates the beginning of Christianity.

Though Christmas is normally celebrated on the 25th of December, strong evidence suggests that Jesus may have in fact been born in the spring. Though many Christians date Christ’s birth as the end of the “Before Christ” or BC era, most believe Christ’s birth can actually be dated to 4 BC. This is a bit ironic, since the Christian era is thought to begin with the birth of Christ, but actually begins later.

Recently the Pope has declared in his new book that the entire Christian calendar is based on a miscalculation, and that Jesus was born several years earlier than commonly believed. As he said:

“The calculation of the beginning of our calendar – based on the birth of Jesus – was made by Dionysius Exiguus, who made a mistake in his calculations by several years; the actual date of Jesus’s birth was several years before.

There is no reference to when he was born in the Bible – all we know is that he was born in the reign of Herod the Great, who died before 1AD, it’s been surmised for a very long time that Jesus was born before 1AD – no one knows for sure.

We don’t even know which season he was born in. The whole idea of celebrating his birth during the darkest part of the year is probably linked to pagan traditions and the winter solstice.” 1

What is the status of Jesus in Islam?

Islam is the only non-Christian faith, which makes it an article of faith to believe in Jesus (pbuh). No Muslim is a Muslim if he does not believe in Jesus (pbuh). Islam honors all the Prophets who were sent to mankind. Muslims respect all Prophets in general, but Jesus in particular, because he was one of the Prophets who foretold the coming of Prophet Muhammad (saw). Muslims too, await the second coming of Jesus (pbuh). They consider him one of the greatest of Allah’s Prophets to mankind. A Muslim does not refer to him simply as “Jesus”, but normally adds the phrase “peace be upon him” as a sign of respect.

Jesus (pbuh) is mentioned by name in twenty five places in the Holy Quran, he is also addressed with respect as “Ibn Maryam” meaning “The son of Mary”; and as the “Maseeh” which is translated as “Christ”. He is also known as “Abdullah” i.e. “The servant of Allah”; and as “Rasulallah” which means “The messenger of Allah”. He is spoken of as “Kalimatullah” which means “The Word from Allah”, as “Ruhallah” meaning “The Spirit from Allah”, as an “Ayaah” meaning a “Sign of Allah” and numerous other epithets of honor spread over fifteen different chapters of the Glorious Quran.

No other religion in the world respects and dignifies Jesus (pbuh) as Islam does. We believe that he was born miraculously, without any male intervention, which many modern day Christians do not believe. The Quran confirms his virgin birth in two places of the Quran, in chapter 3 and chapter 19. Reading from the beginning of his birth, we come across the story of Mary, and the esteemed position which she occupies in the House of Islam, before the actual annunciation of the birth of Jesus is given:

“Behold! the angels said: “O Mary! Allah has chosen you and purified you and has chosen you above the women of all nations. O Mary! Worship your Lord devoutly, prostrate yourself, and bow down (in prayer) with those who bow down.”

~ Surah-Al Imran: Ch-3: Ver- 42-43

Behold! the angels said: “O Mary! Allah gives you the glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah.”

~ Surah-Al Imran: Ch-3: Ver-45

Muslims believe that Jesus was born immaculately. Does the miraculous birth of Jesus make him a God or a “begotten” son of God? No! Says the Holy Quran:

“The similitude of Jesus before Allah is as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him: “Be”. And he was.”

~ Surah-Al Imran: Ch-3: Ver-59

Jesus (pbuh) was created through the same power which had brought Eve to life and Adam into being without a father or a mother. The logic of it is that, if being born without a male parent entitles Jesus to being equated with God, then, Adam would have a greater right to such honor as he had no father or mother, and no Christian would readily concede this. Thus, the Muslim is made to repudiate this Christian blasphemy.

Muslims believe in the Absolute Oneness of God, Who is a Supreme Being free of human limitations, needs and wants. He has no partners in His Divinity. He is the Creator of everything and is completely separate from His creation, and all worship is to be directed towards Him alone. We Muslims believe that Jesus Christ (pbuh) never claimed any qualities of divinity, nor did he claim that he deserved to be worshipped. The Quran says that:

“They do blaspheme who say: “Allah is Christ the son of Mary.” But said Christ: “O Children of Israel! worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Whoever associates other gods with Allah, – Allah will forbid him the garden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help.”

~ Surah-Al Maidah: Ch-5: Ver-72

Muslims, like Christians believe that during his prophetic mission, Jesus performed many miracles. These miracles were performed by the will and permission of God, Who has power and control over all things. The Quran tells us that:

“And (appoint him) a messenger to the Children of Israel, (with this message): I have come to you, with a Sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah’s leave: And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I raise the dead, by Allah’s leave; and I declare to you what you eat, and what you store in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you if you are believers.”

~ Surah-Al Imran: Ch-3: Ver-49

Muslims believe that Jesus will return at a time close to the end of the world. The Qur’anic verse which indicates to Jesus’ future return is as follows:

“And (Jesus) shall be a Sign (for the coming of) the Hour (of Judgment): therefore have no doubt about the (Hour), but follow Me: this is a Straight Way.”

~ Surah-Az Zukhruf: Ch-43: Ver-61

Prophet Muhammad (saw) emphasized the importance of Jesus (pbuh) by saying:

“Whoever believes there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, that Muhammad (saw) is His messenger, that Jesus (pbuh) is a servant and messenger of God, His word breathed into Mary and a spirit emanating from Him, and that Paradise and Hell are true, shall be received by God into Heaven.” 2

~ Sahih Al Bukhari: Volume-4: Book-55:

The Book of the Stories of the Prophets: Hadith- 644

Note: To know more about the Status of Jesus Christ (pbuh) in Islam, please read my note “Christ in Islam”.

Was Jesus Christ (pbuh) the Son of God?

Imaan (faith) is the foundation of Islamic society, and Tawheed (the belief in the existence and Oneness of Allah) is the essence of this faith and the very core of Islam. The safe guarding of this Imaan, and of this pure Tawheed, is the primary objective of all Islamic teachings and legislation. In order to keep the Muslim society purified of all traces of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and remnants of error, a continuous war must be waged against all customs and practices which originate from societies’ ignorance of divine guidance, and in the errors of idol worship.

The Christians believe that Jesus Christ (pbuh) is the son of god. We Muslim takes strong exception to the Christian dogma that “Jesus is the only begotten son, begotten not made”. This is what the Christian is made to repeat from childhood in his catechism. The Quran regard Jesus as a righteous messenger of God, and reject him as being God or the begotten Son of God. The Glorious Quran vehemently condemns the idea of Almighty God begetting a son in the following verses:

“They say: “(Allah) Most Gracious has begotten a son!” Indeed you have put forth a thing most monstrous! At it the skies are ready to burst, the earth to split asunder, and the mountains to fall down in utter ruin, that they should invoke a son for (Allah) Most Gracious. For it is not consonant with the majesty of (Allah) Most Gracious that He should beget a son. Not one of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must come to (Allah) Most Gracious as a servant.”

~ Surah-Maryam: Ch-19: Ver-88-93

“And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouths. They only imitate the saying of the disbelievers of old. The Divine Curse of Allah be upon them, how they are deluded away from the truth!”

~ Surah-At Tawbah: Ch-9: Ver-30

“They say: “(Allah) Most Gracious has begotten a son!” Indeed you have put forth a thing most monstrous! At it the skies are ready to burst, the earth to split asunder, and the mountains to fall down in utter ruin, that they should invoke a son for (Allah) Most Gracious. For it is not consonant with the majesty of (Allah) Most Gracious that He should beget a son. Not one of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must come to (Allah) Most Gracious as a servant.”

~ Surah-Maryam: Ch-19: Ver-88-93

“Say: He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begets not, nor is He begotten. And there is none like unto Him.”

~ Surah-Al Ikhlas: Ch-112: Ver-1-4

“Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: (it is) a statement of truth, about which they (vainly) dispute. It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! When He determines a matter, He only says to it, “Be”, and it is. And surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, therefore serve Him; this is the right path.”

~ Surah-Maryam: Ch-19: Ver-34-36

If we read the Holy Bible carefully then we come to know that according to their own God-given records, God has sons by the tons, for instance:

“Adam, which was the son of God.”

~ Luke: Ch-3: Ver-38

“That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair.”

~ Genesis: Ch-6: Ver-2

“And when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them.”

~ Genesis: Ch-6: Ver-4

“He (Solomon) shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father and he shall be My son.”

~ II Samuel: Ch-7: Ver-13-14 ; I Chronicles: Ch-22: Ver-10

“Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn.”

~ Exodus: Ch-4: Ver-22

“For I (God) am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.”

~ Jeremiah: Ch-31: Ver-9

“The LORD hath said unto me (David), Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.”

~ Psalms: Ch-2: Ver-7

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

~ Romans: Ch-8: Ver-14

Can’t you see that in the language of the Jew, every righteous person, every Tom, Dick and Harry who followed the Will and Plan of God, was a SON OF GOD. It was a metaphorical descriptive term, commonly used among the Jews. The Christian agrees with this reasoning, but goes on to say – “but Jesus was not like that”. Adam was made by God. Every living thing was made by God; He is the Lord, Cherisher and Sustainer of all. Metaphorically speaking therefore God is the Father of all. But Jesus was the “BEGOTTEN” son of God, not a “CREATED” son of God?

The Muslim takes exception to the word “begotten”, because begetting is an animal act, belonging to the lower animal functions of sex. How can we attribute such a lowly capacity to God? Metaphorically we are all the children of God – the good and the bad – and Jesus (pbuh) would be closer to being the son of God than any one of us, because he would be more faithful to God than any one of us, because he would be more faithful to God than any one of us can ever be. From that point of view he is preeminently the son of God.

But if you read the “Revised Standard Version (R.S.V)”, which has been revised by 32 scholars of the highest eminence backed by 50 co-operating denominations, this pernicious word “begotten” now has been thrown out unceremoniously.

Can we just wish them by saying “Merry Christmas”?

It is not permissible to greet or congratulate the Non-Muslims on the occasion of Christmas, New Year or any of their other holidays, and it is not permissible to respond to them when they greet us on those occasions, because they are not festivals that are prescribed in our religion, and returning their greeting is an affirmation and approval of them. The Muslim should be proud of his religion and its rulings, and he should be keen to call others and convey to them the religion of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted.

To wish the Non-Muslims with Merry Christmas or any of their religious festivals is haram (forbidden), by consensus of the ulama (ijma’), as Ibn al-Qayyim, may God have mercy on him, said:

“Congratulating the Non-Muslims on the rituals that belong only to them is haram by consensus, as is congratulating them on their festivals and fasts by saying “A happy festival to you” or “May you enjoy your festival”, and so on. If the one who says this has been saved from kufr, it is still forbidden. It is like congratulating someone for prostrating to the cross, or even worse than that. It is as great a sin as congratulating someone for drinking wine, or murdering someone, or having illicit sexual relations, and so on.”

Many of those who have no respect for their religion fall into this error; they do not realize the offensiveness of their actions. Whoever congratulates a person for his disobedience or bid’ah or kufr exposes himself to the wrath and anger of God. If they greet us on the occasion of their festivals, we should not respond, because these are not our festivals, and because they are not festivals which are acceptable to God. These festivals are innovations in their religions, and even those which may have been prescribed formerly have been abrogated by the religion of Islam, with which God sent Muhammad (pbuh) to the whole of mankind.

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) warned the Muslims about imitating the Non-Muslims:

“If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing will be rejected.” 3

~ Sahih Al Bukhari: Volume-3: Book-49:

The Book of Peacemaking: Hadith-861

“The final hour will not come until my followers copy the deeds of the previous nations and follow them very closely, span by span, and cubit by cubit. It was said, O Allah’s Messenger! Do you mean by those (nations) the Persians and the Byzantines? The Prophet (saw) said, Who can it be other than they?” 4

~ Sahih Al Bukhari: Volume-9: Book-92:

The Book of Holding Fast to the Quran and Sunnah: Hadith-421

“You will follow the wrong ways, of your predecessors so completely and literally that if they should go into the hole of a mastigure, you too will go there.” We said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Do you mean the Jews and the Christians?” He replied, “Whom else?” 5

~ Sahih Al Bukhari: Volume-9: Book-92:

The Book of Holding Fast to the Quran and Sunnah: Hadith-422

“The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: Whoever imitates a nation is one of them.” (Classified as Hasan Sahih by Shaikh Al Albani & Zubair Ali Zai)

~ Sunan Abu Dawud: Darussalam Publications: Volume-4: Book-31:

The Book of Clothing: Page-388: Hadith-4031

“You must keep to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs; cling to it firmly. Beware of newly invented matters, for every new matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misleading.”

~ Sahih Al Bukhari

“You would tread the same path as was trodden by those before you inch by inch and step by step so much so that if they had entered into the hole of the lizard, you would follow them in this also. We said: Allah’s Messenger, do you mean Jews and Christians (by your words) “those before you”? He said: Who else (than those two religious groups)?”

~ Sahih Muslim: Book-34:

The Book of Knowledge: Hadith-6448

“Do not enter upon the mushrikeen in their churches on the day of their festival, for divine wrath is descending upon them.” 6

~ Sunan Al Kubra Baihaqi: Hadith-18288

“Avoid the enemies of Allah on their festivals.” 7

~ Sunan Al Kubra Baihaqi: Hadith-18289

“Whoever settles in the land of the non-Arabs and celebrates their new year and festival and imitates them until he dies in that state, will be gathered with them on the Day of Resurrection.” 8

~ Sunan Al Kubra Baihaqi: Hadith-18290

Muslims should heed this warning and refrain from copying or imitating the Non-Muslims in their celebrations. Islam has strongly forbidden Muslims to follow the religious or social customs of the Non-Muslims, and especially of the idol-worshippers or those who worship the devil. The Prophet (pbuh) said:

“By Him in Whose hands is my life, you are ordered to enjoin good and forbid evil, or else Allah will certainly afflict you with torments. Thereafter, even your du’a (supplications) will not be accepted.”

~ Sunan At Tirmidhi

“Every innovation (in our religion) is misguidance, even if the people regard it as something good.”

~ Ad Daarimi

“When the people see a person committing a wrong, but do not seize his hand to restrain him or her from the deed, it is likely that Allah will punish them both.”

~ Sunan Abu Dawud, Sunan At Tirmidhi, Sunan An Nasai

Shaykh Al Islam Ibn Taymiyah said in his book Iqtidaa’ al-siraat al-mustaqeem mukhaalifat ashaab al-jaheem, that:

“Imitating them in some of their festivals implies that one is pleased with their false beliefs and practices, and gives them the hope that they may have the opportunity to humiliate and mislead the weak. Whoever does anything of this sort is a sinner, whether he does it out of politeness or to be friendly, or because he is too shy to refuse, or for whatever other reason, because this is hypocrisy in Islam, and because it makes the Non-Muslims feel proud of their religion. Allah is the One Whom we ask to make the Muslims feel proud of their religion, to help them adhere steadfastly to it, and to make them victorious over their enemies, for He is the Strong and Omnipotent.”

What does the Jude-Christian Scripture have to say about Christmas?

Long before December 25th was associated with the birth of Jesus Christ, winter celebrations have been observed in various ways around the world. From the Norse celebrating Yule to the ancient romans celebrating saturnalia in honor of their pagan god Saturn. The question that I am going to propose is this: Should Bible believing Christians celebrate Christmas? Before you answer, let’s begin by looking at the history of this day and also how ancient pagan practices have been left behind for centuries.

The Norse were a pagan civilization that worshiped gods such as Thor and Odin and were known to have had human sacrifices. In Scandinavia, the Norse celebrated the holiday called Yule from December 21, the winter solstice, through January. In recognition of the return of the sun, they would bring home large logs, which they would set on fire. This custom is still kept in some homes to this day, burning the yule log during Christmas. Now you tell me, what has this pagan tradition of burning a yule log have anything to do with celebrating the birth of Jesus?

The celebration during the winter solstice for the ancient Romans was Saturnalia- a holiday celebrating the god of agriculture, Saturn. It was observed beginning in the week leading up to the winter solstice and continued for a full month. It was a hedonistic time where food and drink where plentiful and the normal order of things was turned upside down. Businesses and schools were closed so all could join in on the celebrations. During this time, some also celebrated the birth of Mithra- the pagan god of unconquerable sun- on December 25th. To the Romans, this was the most important day of the year.

In the early 4th century, Catholic leaders decided to institute the celebration of Jesus’ birth. They had a problem though, no where in the bible does it say the actual date of Jesus’ birth, nor does it say we are to honor this day at all, but Pope Julius the 1st chose December 25th, the same date of Mithras birth, keeping all the evil traditions alive anyway. Now since Catholicism decided all of this, should we obey Roman Catholicism or God which warned us about her in the following verses:

“Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.”

~ Revelations: Ch-18: Ver-4-5

Origins of the Christmas Tree

Probably the most common symbol associated with Christmas is the Christmas tree. The origins of this custom date back long before it was adopted into Christmas. The evergreen tree itself in many ancient cultures was believed to keep away witches, ghosts, and evil spirits. The early Romans during Saturnalia decorated their homes with boughs of evergreen trees as did the Druids. Germany is credited with starting this tradition as it is kept today, during the 16th century. They would cut evergreen trees down, decorate them with various things like apples and candles and place them in their homes. The origin of this practice of decorating evergreen trees comes straight from the heathen religions, Shall we do as the heathen do?

“Thus says the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”

~ Jeremiah: Ch-10: Ver-2-5

Who is Santa Claus?

Now we come to the infamous SANTA CLAUS. History states he was actually a 4th century Catholic Bishop that was admired for his charity. Legend states that he gave away all his inherited wealth traveling the countryside giving to the poor and sick. He has many names around the world: Santa, Father Christmas, St Nick and Kris Kringle just to name a few. Kris Kringle actually means Christ-Kind and that is exactly what this satanic character is trying to replace, Jesus Christ. The similarities are there if you just look. Santa knows when you are good or bad, when you’re sleeping and when you are awake. He has a list of all the good and bad. He is a carpenter and his hair and beard are white like snow. If you were to ask a child who this was just by this description alone would they say it was Jesus or Santa? We lie to our children about a fictional character, but fail to teach them the truth about Jesus Christ. We tell our children to be good or Santa won’t bring them any presents, but what about teaching them to obey God and his word?

If Jesus (pbuh) was not born on the 25th of December, then when was he born?

When we read the Glorious Quran, we come to know that Jesus (pbuh) was in Mid-Summer and not in Winter Solstice. The Quran says that:

“And shake the trunk of date-palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe-dates upon you.”

~ Surah-Maryam: Ch-19: Ver-25

In the above verse Allah (swt) was commanding Mary (pbuh) through Gabriel or Jesus (pbuh) to shake the trunk of the palm tree so that dates will fall thereof, then eat them and get refreshed. But if you ask any horticulturist i.e. an expert in the science or art of cultivating fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants, he will tell you that the dates always grow in mid-summer and not in winter. Furthermore, the Bible gives a similar message in the following verse:

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.”

~ Luke: Ch-2: Ver-8

Now the question that comes to the mind is that, why were the shepherds looking after their flocks in 25th December at night time? When at that time it happened to be much cold in the open field and the flocks could freeze to death as well as them. Those days were not like these days as there were no heat of the cities, vehicles and industries. Then we are told that, when Jesus (pbuh) was born three kings came to visit the child by following the star from the east. How come in the winter nights stars can be seen? As we know that the mist, fog and smoke cover the sky in winters. So we can conclude that even though the Quran and the Bible does not give a specific date, they give a hint that it was summer rather than winter.

Now, after knowing all this information just given, I’ll ask the same question from the beginning:

Should Bible believing Christians celebrate Christmas? No we should not celebrate this day. Christians should not keep these pagan festivals alive. Their roots are satanic. Only the facade has changed to appear to be so called Christianized. It’s not about putting Christ back into Christmas either, Jesus Christ never had anything to do with Christmas in the first place. Catholicism changed its name, but that’s all they did. All the pagan elements are still there. We are never told to celebrate the Christ’s Birth or remember it in some outward showing.

But you would say, it’s a time of giving and joy. Don’t we, as Christians, do this always? Why do we need a special day for this? Please consider the message of the following verse carefully:

“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”

~ Galatians: Ch-1: Ver-10

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

~ John: Ch-4: Ver-23-24

In the End

So as any rational person can see, there is no sound basis for Christmas, nor did Jesus (peace be upon him) or his true followers celebrate Christmas or ask anyone to celebrate Christmas, nor was there any record of anyone calling themselves Christians celebrating Christmas until several hundred years after Jesus. So were the companions of Jesus more righteously guided in not celebrating Christmas or are the people of today?

So if you want to respect Jesus, peace be upon him, as Muslims do, don’t celebrate some fabricated event that was chosen to coincide with pagan festivals and copy pagan customs. Dear readers, honestly think, that God or even Jesus himself would approve or condemn such a thing? If you say approve, then obviously you are not interested in the truth.

We ask Allah, the One, Singular God, with no partners or sons, the God of all creation and mankind, to guide us all to the path of guidance and sincerity.

1st April – a day when people lie, play jokes and mock in the name of entertainment. This ugly practice of lying, which is considered to be merely a humor, is known to have caused great harm to many. Even trauma and deaths. Still this dishonest tradition is not only practiced among the common masses, but also newspapers and magazines participate in it by publishing false news and untrue stories on the first day of April!
